Viking Invasion

As part of their history work, Class 3 have been learning about the Vikings. They have learned all about how the Vikings invaded Anglo-Saxon Britain and in the video, Emma explains this further. They worked really hard creating Viking inspired pouches. The children had to design and make a pouch that would have been suitable for a soldier or farmer and would have been able to hold their coins safely. The children used a range of design, cutting, stitching and sewing skills. The results are fantastic and the children were extremely proud of them! Many of them successfully held their coins safely too!

Jump Rope Skipping Event

As part of our Fighting Fit topic, Class 1 took part in the British Heart Foundation’s ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ charity event. We skipped for a whole hour which made our hearts beat fast and we felt very hot and sweaty! We needed a big drink afterwards! The hard work was worth it as we kept our bodies fit and healthy whilst raising £200 for charity!

Clitheroe Castle Visit

At the end of December Class Three made a visit to Clitheroe Castle, it was an amazing day out.

The children learnt a lot about castles and battles whilst they were there. As part of the day, all the children had eggs which had to be protected at all costs! They had to create armour for their eggs in preparation for battle and then had a competition to throw them off the castle’s keep. The eggs had to remain intact to be in with a chance of winning. Thankfully they were hardboiled seeing as both Miss Taylor and Miss Bishop had to be at the bottom of the castle to check them!

The children also re-enacted the battles of 1066 complete with shields and actions. They were also shown swords and shields that would have been used by the different armies in 1066. Lola was able to try on a helmet and Joshua got to try on the chain mail – being fully dressed as a soldier. Until he put it on, he had no idea how heavy it was!

Class One Nativity

Class One have spent the last half term making sure that they were ready to celebrate Christmas in one of the best ways possible – by performing their Nativity.

This year they chose A Wriggly Nativity by Peter Fardell, where everyone is so excited about the coming birth that nobody can keep still. Everyone performed brilliantly, lines were learnt, songs sung and dances danced with so much enthusiasm and the best smiles ever!

Well done, Class One and all the staff and friends who made sure it happened.

This week’s news

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make Santa Stops at Sabden such a success. We raised over £700 which is a marvellous amount for a small school. This will be used towards much-needed Monster Phonics Reading Books for Class 1. A special thank you to Mel Cregan who personally sourced and collected some very attractive raffle prizes which meant we raised £250 from the raffle alone.
Here we are, heading into the last week of term already! The children have been enjoying lots of festive activities including Santa Stops, the Class 1 Nativity and the pantomime, Cinderella, which was great fun! Next week is very busy too so please keep an eye on the calendar and let the office know if you need any more information.
Monday is Christmas Party Day when children can come to school in party clothes and each class has their own party, then all the children come together in the afternoon for a party tea. Letters have been sent home detailing what food we would like your child to bring in.
On Tuesday children in Class 2 are going to Wilson’s Playing Fields to take part in a Santa Dash fun run to music along with other local schools. (This academic year we are aiming to take all classes to participate in at least one inter-school event.)
On Wednesday we have an especially busy day – Whole School Mass in the morning, then school Christmas Lunch followed by a Magic Show straight after school which should be a super way to end this term. Please note that school finishes at 1.45pm on Thursday.
Wishing you all a joyful Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.

Fighting Fit

In last half term’s topic, ‘Fighting Fit’, Class One thought about how we can stay healthy with an emphasis on exercise, healthy eating and hygiene. We did lots of wonderful work for this including a very exciting visit from Matthew’s Daddy who arrived in a Rapid Response Vehicle with flashing lights and the siren blaring! He talked to us about his role as a first responder and showed us lots of emergency first aid equipment that is kept inside the vehicle including a defibrillator. We learned a lot and are now applying this (gently), in our roleplay doctor’s surgery!

Following this, we thought that it might be a lovely opportunity for the children to take part in a fundraising activity for the British Heart Foundation; encouraging the children to think about those less fortunate whilst learning a new form of exercise at the same time! On Tuesday November 26th, all the class took part in our ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ event. We worked very hard to learn some different skipping techniques before holding our sponsored skip for an hour.

Cl3 Science: Habitats

In Class 3 we have been thinking about animals and their habitats. Everyone was given clues based upon a certain animal. They then had to work out, using their scientific knowledge, what the animal was and where it lived.

The children then used junk modelling to create their animal’s habitat. They wrote and prepared speeches about their habitats which they performed to the class. You can see one of the speeches in the video below.
